92년 wfmu라는 라디오 방송국에서 부른 버전이다. 일명 "원곡을 찜쪄먹는 제프 버클리 리메이크" 중 하나로서 내게는 엘튼 존의 70년대 작들을 모조리 찾아듣게 만든 곡이다. <grace>를 내기 2년 전, 서서히 대학가와 클럽에서 라이브로 이름을 알려가던 중에 출연하게된 이 방송에서 제프는 훗날 라이브에서 보여준 호기로운 여유와는 반대로 멘트를 약간은 부담스러워하면서 별다른 텀없이 노래를 이어나간다.
대개의 요절 아티스트들이 그렇듯 적지않은 부틀렉들이 나왔고 나는 그 중에서도 이 곡과 (일본 라디오에서 불렀다고 알고있는) lover you should've come over를 가장 아낀다. 더이상 새노래를 들을 수 없기에 어떻게해서든 라이브 음원을 찾고있고 그렇다보니 다 익숙한 셋리스트이지만 계속 듣다보면 어디서 숨을 들이쉬고 내뱉는지, 연주시간은 어디가 어떻게 차이가 나는지, 가사는 틀리지않는지 등등을 챙기게되고 자연히 새롭게 들릴 수 밖에 없다.
엘튼 존의 원곡이 담고있는 사연을 굳이 상기하지않더라도 제프의 이 버전은 충분히 처연하고도 남는다. 12월이 온통 시끄럽고 들떠있는 반면 바로 그 전달인 11월은 참으로 대조적인데 그런 11월스러운 분위기가 이 곡을 들을 때마다 느껴진다. 사실은 닉 드레이크의 주기에 맞춰 그의 노래를 포스팅하려했지만 하다보니 자연히 이 곡에 손이 갈 수 밖에 없던 이유다.
그가 사랑했던 paris, 이렇게 생생한 그의 얼굴. 토요일 오후 <라이브앳시네>와 이 곡만 줄창 돌려듣고있었다.
